SARA USMANI
Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)
I am a collection of my experiences and interests, and this shows in my therapeutic approach. I have a keen interest in all things science, particularly neuroscience. Through my roles—volunteering at a cancer center, working in the public sector, inpatient units, group and foster homes—I have strengthened my understanding of what constitutes genuine, helpful care. Being your therapist is my privilege, and I take the role seriously.
WORKING TOGETHER
With over 8 years of mental health experience, I understand that all emotions and behaviours show up for a reason, no matter how uncomfortable or disruptive they may be. We work together to understand their function and determine if they are still helpful or part of a repetitive pattern. We find healthier ways to achieve this function that align with your purpose and values. My integrative approach means applying various theories and considering mental, emotional, and physical health in a unified way.
Example
Trying to calm your anxious mind using your thoughts can sometimes feel like trying to turn a doorknob with freshly lotioned, greasy hands. The movement and skill to open the door are correct; you’re just using it at the wrong time. Here, you are implementing a thought skill before calming your nervous system. I create a plan with you to ensure your efforts have the best chance at success using integrative knowledge.
CULTURALLY SENSITIVE CARE
I am passionate about de-stigmatizing mental health and working from a trauma-informed and culturally-sensitive perspective. Addressing cognitions and emotions is crucial for achieving desired results, and it's equally important to consider our value systems, cultural backgrounds, and systemic experiences to find true healing.
I won’t encourage you to set firm boundaries with family members when that hurts you more than it helps. I will explore alternative culturally relevant options.
I won’t prioritize individual needs when you value community care. I’ll explore what balance you prefer.
I will tell you it's okay to have multiple value systems and versions of yourself.
I understand how microaggressions add to your trauma. I believe you and incorporate their impact into your treatment.
I allow you to grieve and feel anger towards systemic barriers without jumping to a solution-focused approach.
